California Garden

Merging art, history, nature and culture under one seamless roof, our proposal for the Garden of Knowledge competition presents a museum extension to the Almo Collegio Borromeom, continuing its legacy and passion. The design draws from a variety of references that inform the program, geometry, and atmosphere. Inspired by the layout of the academy’s main square and courtyard, our proposal introduces a perfect square intersected by a series of lines and volumes, culminating in a serene

meditative chamber. As visitors enter, the unassuming stone facade guides them into the central space, where they are brought face-to-face with nature: the sky above and a reflecting pond in front. Glimpses of this captivating space can be viewed from each of the entry points and subtly echoes the vaulted ceilings of the historic church itself.

The project aims not to overwhelm the historic campus but to exist in harmony with it. The renovation of existing spaces ensures they meet contemporary program needs, while the connection between the old and new zones forms a larger, unified space. Within the church courtyard, our proposal introduces a new garden space, framed by a small pavilion. This outdoor area extends the galleries and offices outward, offering a seamless connection to nature and the changing seasons.

The pavilion references the arches of the facade, drawing visitors into the gallery space. Finally, the design addresses the exhibition of art by creating flexible and adaptable galleries—both within the old and new—that respond to the evolving needs of curators and the exhibition space. The proposal strives to create an inclusive environment where all visitors can reflect and engage with the rich cultural heritage that surrounds them.
